USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is the generall

USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is the generally-accepted authorization body for paddle certification. The organization removed its certification for several Joola, Gearbox and ProKennex paddles, effective July 1, 2025.

"The trampoline effect on pickleball paddles refers to the phenomenon where the surface of a paddle deforms and then rapidly returns to its original shape upon contact with the ball, effectively "springing" the ball off the paddle. This effect can amplify the ball's speed and force beyond what is typical for normal play."

Late Night Play sessions Can't play during office

Late Night Play sessions

Can't play during office hours? Don't want to interfere with dinner plans? We got you - the VPA has secured more court space at Sunset Community Centre for late night Friday pickleball sessions, 9:30-11:30 pm.

Rule changes, effective January 1 2025

Recreational play in both Canada and the US follows the rules set by the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA). VPA Coach, Walt Woo, walks us through the USAPA rule changes for 2025.

Key updates include:
Spin Serves: Popularized by pro pickleball player Zane Navratil is NOT permitted. Okay so this isn’t a new rule for the upcoming year but hey we got your attention, didn’t we?

Volley Definition: The act of volleying now begins when the ball is struck before bouncing and ends when the player's follow-through momentum stops. This change clarifies that the swing before hitting the ball is not part of the volley. Additionally, partners must avoid contact during a volley to prevent faults.

Spectator Line Calls: Players are prohibited from soliciting or accepting line call input from spectators, emphasizing that line calls should be made solely by players or officials.

Fault Calls: Both partners must agree when calling a foot fault for a replay to occur. Players are also required to call faults on themselves or their partners if observed, and these calls must be made before the next serve.

Serving Method: Players are now permitted to release the ball with their paddle during a serve, provided no spin is imparted. For drop serves, the ball must be released using gravity without force.

'Not Ready' Signals: The receiving team can use verbal indicators like "stop" or "wait" to signal they are not ready after the server has called the score. Non-verbal signals should be disregarded by the server.

Autographed Paddles: Paddles with autographs are now allowed in sanctioned events, provided the autograph does not alter the paddle's surface.

Server Positioning: Clarifications have been made regarding the correct server in doubles play, aligning server position with the team's score and starting positions.
